Intern Experience Days – HR Day: Learning and Laughing Together In Partnership with BrookLynk
This summer Homeward Bound was thrilled to welcome interns from BrookLynk, a youth employment and career development program that helps students gain real-world work experience in fields they’re passionate about. Through this exciting partnership, BrookLynk interns work in our residential homes while also spending four days exploring different departments at Homeward Bound, and on July 15, it was HR’s turn!
A Full Day with HR
The HR Intern Experience Day kicked off at 8:00 AM with donuts, an agenda, and great energy in the conference room. After a warm welcome, Serena, our Vice President of HR, shared her career journey, giving the interns insight into her role and what it’s like leading HR at Homeward Bound.
The interns then jumped right into a hands-on activity, conducting real interviews with candidates for Direct Support Professional (DSP) roles. Using a structured guide, the interns rotated through questions and received helpful feedback after each interview. One of the highlights? They even got to interview a Program Manager alongside our recruiter and absolutely nailed it!
Behind the Scenes of HR
After a tasty lunch from Jimmy John’s, interns sat in on our weekly HR team meeting, where they observed the strategic side of HR and offered their input on upcoming team engagement events.
Wrapping Up: Reflection, TikToks & Team Spirit
To end the day on a high note, the interns collaborated with our team to create TikToks for Homeward Bound’s social media. From trend brainstorming to filming, the room was filled with laughter, creativity, and connection.
A word of advice for other companies looking to host interns?
Prepare as many hands-on activities as you can! For example, we made sure to stock the interns’ day full of interviews and at the end, they wanted to do even more! Tasks that may seem mundane are a new and exciting experience for that intern.
