From Kenya to Homeward Bound, Inc.

My Journey

By: David Omogo

My name is David Omogo, and I would like to share the story of my journey from Kenya to becoming a part of the Homeward Bound, Inc. (HBI) family.

I began my professional career in Kenya, working in a manufacturing facility. While the work was fulfilling for a time, I soon realized my true passion lay in helping others, particularly in the medical field. Driven by this calling, I made the life-changing decision to move to America, seeking new opportunities to make a difference.

In 2015, I joined the Homeward Bound, Inc. Woodland Home Team as direct care staff. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working in various HBI homes, including Lee, Maple Grove, Medicine Lake, and Atwood. At each location, I was warmly welcomed and had the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with both clients and fellow staff. These experiences not only strengthened my dedication to the work but also enriched my personal life in ways I hadn’t imagined.

What I find most remarkable about HBI is not just the ability to work at different homes, but the many benefits they offer. From health and dental insurance to maternal and paternal leave, a 403B plan, and scholarships for higher education, HBI supports its employees at every turn. For me, the most valuable benefit has been the flexible work schedule, which has allowed me to pursue my education. I started in the LPN Program and am now furthering my studies in the RN Program.

HBI has also recognized how important it is for me to stay connected with my roots. They have graciously allowed me to take time off to return to Kenya to visit my family and friends, while keeping my job secure for when I return. This kind of support is invaluable, and it’s a testament to the organization’s commitment to its employees’ well-being.

To anyone considering a career in the direct care field, I would wholeheartedly recommend Homeward Bound, Inc. The flexibility they offer makes it possible to pursue personal and professional goals while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

HBI isn’t just a place to work – it’s a place that fosters growth, both personally and professionally.
