Walking Together: A Story of Service and Success at HBI

As the Chinese proverb says, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” and so began my journey with Homeward Bound, Inc. (HBI).

My name is Wycklif Ogoti, and I currently serve as a Registered Nurse in the role of Nurse Case Manager and Program Manager at HBI. Originally from Kenya, I moved to Minnesota in 2015. I am married and the proud father of two young sons, ages 6 and 3.

When I first arrived in Minnesota, healthcare was an unfamiliar and somewhat intimidating field to me. However, in 2016, I felt a deep calling to work in caregiving and improve the lives of others. I wanted to make a meaningful impact and bring happiness to those I cared for. I began my journey with HBI as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) and On-Site Supervisor (OSS) at the Brooklyn Park Home. After a few months, I transitioned to a smaller setting at the Winnetka Home. The welcoming and experienced staff at HBI trained me, and I soon became a valued member of the Winnetka family.

One of the many things I’m grateful for at HBI is the flexibility they offered me, allowing me to balance work and college. In February 2020, I earned my Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification, which led to my promotion. I joined the PRN Float Nurses team, where I was trained to work in several high-medical-need homes.

HBI’s support didn’t stop there. Motivated by their scholarship program, I returned to school and became a Registered Nurse (RN) in August 2023. The organization also allowed me to travel back to Kenya yearly for extended periods to visit my family, which gave me the opportunity to bond with my two sons. These trips meant the world to me, and now my family is here with me in Minnesota.

In August 2024, I took on the role of Nurse Case Manager and Program Manager at HBI’s Noble Court Home, marking a new chapter in my career.

I often reflect on that day in June 2016 when I walked alone to my job interview, full of hope but unsure of what lay ahead. Today, I walk alongside many others, having made countless friends at HBI. The clients and staff here have truly become my second family. My journey with Homeward Bound has been one of growth, learning, and fulfillment, and I’m proud to share my story. Just like me, anyone can grow and thrive at HBI, progressing from a DSP/OSS to an RN, Nurse Case Manager, or Program Manager.
